“Bunny, a wedding lasts only one day… but its EMI can last for a decade.”
The Famous Middle-Class Dilemma
Bunny stormed into my home like a groom running late for his own marriage.
Bunny sighed, “Uncle, my cousin’s wedding cost Rs.40 lakhs. Now everyone in my family expects the same from me. But if I spend like that, my savings will vanish faster than ice cream in Delhi heat. And my Bank Account will become, A Multiverse of Money Madness. Also, I will have to take a Wedding Loan”
He sank into the chair, defeated. His dream of a happy marriage was turning into a nightmare of bills.
I put down my cup of tea and smiled.
“Bunny, the problem is society’s obsession with show-off weddings. Guests will eat the free butter naan at your wedding and forget it by next week. But your EMIs? They’ll stay with you longer than your honeymoon memories.”
Bunny’s eyes widened. He realised, I wasn’t joking.
The Real Problem: “Weddings = Status Symbol”
In India, weddings have turned into a competition.
Families spend far beyond their means just to look rich.
Emotional pressure and relatives’ opinions lead to reckless spending.
The result? Broken fixed deposits, personal loans, even selling gold - all for a marriage.
And then come the hidden costs:
The Guest-List Multiplier: Every extra guest adds food, invites, gifts, and venue costs.
The Designer Trap: Lakhs spent on clothes and jewellery worn once, then packed away.
Gold Overdose: Extra jewellery only because “the neighbour’s daughter wore more.”
Multi-Event Madness: Engagement, Sangeet, Mehendi, Cocktail, Wedding, Reception - each doubling or tripling the budget.
Logistics: Travel, hotels, transport for relatives.
Pre-Wedding Renovation: Suddenly the house must be painted because “people are coming.”
Post-Wedding Burden: Honeymoon, rituals, return gifts - more money out the door.
The end result? Couples begin married life with EMIs and debt, not freedom and savings.
The Plan - Uncle’s Wedding Survival Kit
I leaned closer.
“Bunny, weddings don’t ruin savings. Overspending does. Here’s the plan.”
The Wedding Survival Kit
Set a Hard Budget: Treat it like portfolio allocation. Fix a number and never cross it. You may keep 10–15% of the money as buffer for surprise expenses.
Cut the Guest List: Invite only close family and real friends. Every guest you cut is real money saved (This is exactly what Investing Uncle did, many years ago).
Consolidate Functions: Combine smaller events. Host Mehendi and Haldi at home. One venue for multiple events = huge savings.
Choose Off-Peak Dates: Weekday weddings or off-season months bring cheaper venues and vendors.
Go Digital with Invites: Online Cards, email, or a wedding website. Elegant, affordable, eco-friendly.
Rent or Borrow Attire/Jewellery: Designer clothes and heavy sets? Rent them. Reuse family Jewellery. Nobody will remember the label.
Negotiate Smartly: Ask vendors for complimentary extras (longer hours, valet, free decor add-ons). Also, direct discounts.
DIY Where Possible: Cousins can handle music, friends can set up decor corners. Save where you can.
Gold via ETFs: If gold is a must, invest in Gold ETFs early and redeem later to buy only what’s necessary.
Start a Wedding SIP: Begin saving years in advance with a goal-based investment. It’s smarter than scrambling later.
Never Touch Core Savings: Emergency fund, retirement savings, children’s education money - untouchable.
Bunny’s Realisation
Bunny did some quick maths.
“So Uncle, if I keep it simple and spend Rs.10–12 lakhs instead of Rs.30 lakhs… I’ll save Rs.18 lakhs. That could:
Become a down payment for a house, or
Start a strong retirement fund, or
Grow into Rs.1 crore in mutual funds over time.”
“Exactly,” I said. “Marriage should begin with love, not liability.”
Bunny Becomes Smarter
Bunny leaned back, finally smiling.
“Uncle, you’re right. Ten years later, no one will remember my sherwani brand. But if I invest wisely, my Spouse will thank me forever.”
“True wealth,” I replied, “is not the size of your banquet hall… it’s the size of your financial freedom.”
I reminded Bunny, “Remember our lesson from last week’s blog…
Why Women in Their 40s Must Have Their Own Wealth Plans?
…Independence matters more than show-off.
The same rule applies to weddings - freedom from ‘what will people say’ is priceless.”
Our Reader = Real Hero
And now, dear reader, it’s your turn.
Bunny chose the path of wisdom - a simple, meaningful wedding without EMIs haunting his marriage.
You too can rewrite your story. Because the real prestige is not guests praising your decor… it’s your children praising your financial discipline.
“A smaller wedding plate is fine - a smaller retirement fund is not.”
If this blog saved you from turning your wedding into an EMI trap, then fuel Uncle’s wisdom with a cup of tea.
After all, I don’t run on champagne speeches - I run on hot Tea.
